About the Artist

Martha Eleanor Nicholson Hurst (1913–1988) was a listed California painter celebrated for her luminous desert landscapes of the American Southwest. Ohio-born, she studied under Andrew Wyeth before moving to Sedona, Arizona, where she worked alongside Olaf Wieghorst. Marriage to wood sculptor Ronald C. Hurst brought her to Southern California, where she continued her studies with the renowned desert painter John Hilton. She spent her most productive years in San Diego County — La Mesa and El Cajon — capturing the remote backcountry in her signature bold palette. She later retired to Yountville in Napa Valley, where she passed in 1988. Her works are scarce and increasingly sought after by collectors of California regionalist art.
