What we can tell you

Late Flurry is a documented Casson title. Beyond that, we describe what we can see and stop there.

Casson prints exist in several quite different classes, and the class matters. He spent most of his working life at Sampson-Matthews in Toronto, personally overseeing the silkscreen programme that put Canadian art into schools, barracks and embassies — hand-pulled prints, built up from many passes of opaque colour. Later in the century his images were also issued as numbered lithographs, printed from finished paintings, with the artist adding his initials by hand. Both are legitimate. They are not the same object and they do not carry the same value.

We have not yet established with certainty which family this sheet belongs to, and we would rather say so than guess in either direction. There is no published catalogue of Casson's prints, and we could find no auction record for Late Flurry specifically, so the sheet itself is the evidence.

If that distinction matters to you — and it reasonably might — ask us. We will examine the sheet under magnification and tell you plainly what we find, before you buy. We are also happy for you to have it assessed independently.

On the “artist's proof” marking

Worth understanding generally: in classic printmaking, proofs are genuinely scarce, often around a tenth of a small edition. In later commercial print programmes, proof runs tend to be large relative to the edition, so the designation can carry less scarcity than the term implies. The useful question with any proof is how many were made as a fraction of the total.
