Snow Flurries — A.J. Casson, Numbered Print 596/700

Snow Flurries — A.J. Casson (1898–1992), Group of Seven

A quiet Ontario village street in winter: snow-dusted clapboard houses, bare trees, two figures walking into a gathering storm. Atmospheric, still, and quintessentially Canadian. Large format, cleanly framed in dark wood with a double white mat, glazed.

What is on the sheet

• Numbered 596/700 below the image
• A signature in pencil below the image, with the notation “Approved”
• A second signature within the printed image itself, lower right
• Embossed seals on the mat

What we can tell you

Casson joined the Group of Seven in 1926, replacing Frank Johnston at Franklin Carmichael's invitation, and was its youngest member. Alongside his painting he spent most of his working life at Sampson-Matthews in Toronto, where he personally oversaw the silkscreen programme that put Canadian art into schools, barracks and embassies. That long commercial career is why a great many Casson prints exist, in several quite different classes — and the class matters to what a sheet is worth.

We have not established which class this one belongs to, and we would rather say so than guess. There is no published catalogue of Casson's prints, and we could find no record of a Snow Flurries issued in an edition of 700. So we are describing the sheet, not making a claim about its edition history. The embossed seals are on the mat rather than on the paper itself, which means they travel with the framing rather than with the print.

We would rather tell you this than let you assume more than we know. If provenance matters to you here — and it reasonably might — ask us and we will tell you plainly what we find, or have it assessed independently. We are happy to help arrange that.
